Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling, traditional Turkish oil wrestling tournament. It is held in Edirne every year between the end of June and the beginning of July. Wrestlers compete in the arena for three days. In the finals held on the last day, the first, second and third place winners of each category are determined. The most important of these is the chief wrestler. The Kırkpınar Festival is held during the wrestling and various events are held. Wrestling is held in all the fairs held throughout the Ottoman Empire, but only the wrestler who wins the “chief” in Kırkpınar was known as the “chief wrestler” until the next year’s Kırkpınar wrestling. This idea continues today.
