It is known that there was a wooden bridge in the place of the stone bridge structure located on the Meriç River in the Central District of Edirne Province. During Sultan Mahmud II’s visit to Edirne, it was decided to rebuild this wooden bridge in masonry, but the bridge, which was started in 1833 (H:1249), remained unfinished due to financial reasons and the death of the sultan. Today’s bridge was built by his son Sultan Abdülmecid between 1842-1847 (H.1258-1263) and its architect is unknown. The first of the inscriptions regarding the construction of the structure is a repair inscription written by Pertev Pasha from the period of Mahmud II. The second is the reconstruction inscription written in the Talik script of the poet Ziver Bey during the period of Sultan Abdülmecid. It is known that this inscription was destroyed during the Greek occupation of Edirne. Today, another inscription written in 1966 by calligrapher Mustafa Uğur, true to the original, is located in the place of this inscription. Due to its construction date, this structure is the latest among Edirne bridges. The bridge, built of cut stone, has twelve eyes. There are eleven discharge/discharge eyes with round arches on the bridge’s piers. The bridge is 261 m long and 7 m wide.
